She Applied to My Program on a Tuesday

She was a software engineer. Lebanese background. Living in Finland, ten years in tech, ready to build something of her own.

Her idea: a Lebanese pastry business she was building on evenings and weekends with a colleague, also a software engineer. They already had a website. They had orders coming in. They were ready to grow.

I asked five questions in the first five minutes of our call.

By question three, I had already seen enough.

She did not qualify for the Weatherproof Business™ Launchpad. Not because she lacked drive. Not because the idea was impossible. But because she did not have a profitable business model. And she had never once done the math to find out.

That conversation stayed with me. It always does, when someone is working this hard toward something that is quietly working against them.

It is also exactly why I built the Financial Simulator I am going to walk you through at the end of this article.

The Math Nobody Does Before They Start Building

20 to 30 pieces of Lebanese pastry per order.

2 engineers, baking and delivering in their evenings and weekends.

6 to 10 hours of combined human labor per order.

7 to 10 euros in ingredient costs.

She charged between 20 and 40 euros.

Best case: 40 euros charged, 10 euros in costs. 30 euros of profit. For 10 hours of someone’s time.

3 euros per hour.

I ran that calculation in about two minutes. She had never run it once.

When I told her, there was a long pause.

She earns a software engineer’s salary. She believed in her idea. And she was earning three euros per hour for every hour she put into it, which is well below any legal minimum wage, anywhere.

This is the first calculation every entrepreneur needs to make. Before the logo. Before the website. Before the marketing plan.

One order. What does it cost to produce? How long does it take? What do you charge? What is left over? How many orders can you physically fulfill each week?

Four questions. Twenty minutes. Everything you need to know about whether the model works.

Most people skip this. They fall in love with the idea before they understand what the idea actually costs. They start building. They start selling. And months later, they look up and realize they have created a second job that pays less than minimum wage.

The math does not change the passion. But it changes what you do with it.

The Time Trap Most Service Businesses Fall Into

She is not a rare case.

I have this conversation constantly. Especially with people who come to me with consulting business ideas, because consulting feels like the cleanest, lowest-risk path into entrepreneurship. No product to build. No inventory. You sell your expertise and your time.

But that is also where the trap lives.

When your product is your time, every new client costs you more hours. You can scale a product. You cannot scale yourself.

I have worked with brilliant executives earning 200K dollars in their corporate roles, building a consulting practice on the side that would cap them at 60K a year at full capacity.

They had not done the math. They had not asked: at my price point, with the hours I realistically have available, what is the ceiling for this business?

The business model determines the ceiling before you ever start.

One of the first things we look at inside the Weatherproof Business™ Launchpad is the revenue model. Not because I want to discourage anyone. Because I have watched what happens when someone builds for a year toward a model that cannot take them where they want to go.

The pivot is expensive. In time, in money, in confidence.

The better investment is twenty minutes at the beginning, running the numbers honestly, before a single hour goes into building.

That is the conversation I wanted to make easier for everyone.

A Profitable Business Model Needs to Be Tested Before You Build It

I built the Financial Simulator for this exact moment.

You have an idea. You believe in it. You want to know whether it can actually work. Not in the version you imagined at midnight. In the structured, what-does-the-math-actually-say version.

Here is how it works.

You start with the assumptions tab. You choose your business model: one-time sale, monthly subscription, or hybrid, where someone pays a first amount that then rolls into a recurring plan. You fill in your pricing, your expected client numbers month by month, and your costs.

From there, it builds your twelve-month projection. Revenue, costs, and net profit, month by month. Not what you hope for. What the numbers say.

Then there is the five-year tab.

Year one is not your destination. Year one is the hardest year. By year five, your operations are smoother, your reputation is built, your acquisition costs are lower. The five-year view shows you whether this business can actually take you where you want to go, not just where you are in month two.

And then there is the tab I am most proud of.

The reverse engineering tab.

You input the income you want to earn in year one, year two, year three, year four, year five. The simulator works backwards and tells you exactly how many clients you need, at your price point, with your cost structure, to hit that number.

This is the question most entrepreneurs never ask themselves until it is too late.

How many clients do I actually need? At this price? With these costs?

When you see that number clearly, one of two things happens. You realize the model is viable and you move forward with real confidence. Or you realize something needs to shift before you invest another hour into building.

Both outcomes are useful. Both save you enormous amounts of time.

The tool runs on 516 formulas. I built it to cover SaaS, apps, productized consulting, and hybrid models. Because those are the types of businesses I help build, and each one has different unit economics, different growth curves, and a very different profit ceiling.

Run the Numbers Before You Run With the Idea

The woman I spoke to was not making a careless mistake.

She was working hard. She was showing up. She just did not have a clear picture of what her effort was actually producing.

That is not a character flaw. It is a gap in the process. And it is the most common gap I see in people at the beginning of their entrepreneurial journey.

A good idea is not enough. A strong work ethic is not enough. You need a business model that can support the life you are actually trying to create.

The Financial Simulator will not tell you whether your idea is good. That requires customer conversations, real feedback, and proof of demand. But it will tell you, in twenty minutes, whether the structure you are planning to build can take you where you want to go.

If you have not run the numbers yet, this is where you start.

It is free (for now). Use it. Play with the price point. Change the growth assumptions. See what moves and what does not.

Then build from a place of clarity.
